11th June 1936.
Dear Shuckburgh,
Many thanks for your letter of the 8th
June on the subject of the British Empire and
China Trade Fair. I have written a letter to
Malcolm Robertson of which I enclose a copy.
When he comes I propose to read to him extracts
from Caldecott's letter. I was extremely interested
in the "open letter" from Junius Sinicus because he
reproduces almost exactly the arguments which I used
when discussing this question with Malcolm Robertson
and Sempill.
Some friends of mine from Hong Kong whom
I consulted about the fair Beatrice told me that
all that they can remember about the capture by
brigands in the interior was that there had been a
fracas with a Chinese coolie on the Pekin-Hong Kong.
in Hongthing: I felt I must leave
this in!
Sir J.E. Shuckburgh, K.C.M.G., C.B.
